Depth of Field

Reflect1

These are the quickening days of spring. Those earthy aromas even visit the cities. Yesterday, I found a small mirror, and being well aware of its reflectance I brought it outside as a subject for some images. The glass itself has a surface, yet as many of us know, to be able to clearly see what is being reflected it is necessary to focus to the distance of the subject in the mirror- not the physical mirror as an object in itself. When we look within, the tangible surfaces in our lives barely begin representing an inner life calling from beyond our depths. What we see reflected are hints just definable enough to draw us onward.

Roll over Moleskines...

Notebookism friend Kisane sent us this tip from sunny Singapore:

I’ve been a Moleskine fan for the past 4 years but lately they have gotten rather expensive here. I’m looking for a good all-rounder – one I can write in, sketch, paint a bit and doodle. Moleskines seem such a waste for those kind of things. I was reluctant to move to cheaper brands cause they didn’t look cool or feel good as the Moleskine. That is, until I found Monologues. I’ll keep my Moleskine usage confined to my travel journals but for everyday wear? I’ll pick the Monologues.

I’m not sure if they are available outside of Singapore, but you can always contact the website to find out.

"....Thanks to a good friend who hoards these beauties, I've found an alternative -  Monologues. The sketchbook version has 100gsm acid-free cream sketch paper that can take washes but has no pocket on the inside back of a flexible black cover. It takes the ink of my Pilot G2s very well, with no smudges or bleed thrus.

The ruled version however has a pocket a la Moleskine and a stiffer cover that comes in several colours. They both have wrap-around elastic holders and a ribbon bookmark. And better yet - they retail for under S$15 (USD$10)! I can buy two for the price of one Moleskine!"

Review: Rhodia & Clairefontaine Journals, and J. Herbin Inks

Our friend Chris Miesehzahl checks out the latest products from France:

All_a_2

"...both Clairefontaine and Rhodia offer journals in various sizes with various binding choices, some glued some spiral bound (some of the Rhodia products are bound at the top like the Moleskine Reporter's journal). With these products I think I prefer the spiral bound versions as they are much better at lying flat. Both brands offer paper choices of blank, lined, and graph.

The Clairefontaine products come in all kinds of colors while the Rhodia journals seem to stick with their familiar black and orange scheme...."

...I think I like the Clairefontaine paper and Rhodia bindings, but both seem solid. And are particularly affordable when compared to most Moleskine products, which are somewhat controversial among fountain pen users due to some ink bleed-thru issues.

One of my favorite items is the Rhodia 'Mouse-Pad.' It looks like a mouse-pad but is actually paper, a writing pad.

The 2008 Chicago Pen Show:

picture-2.jpg

From May 1 to 4, pen enthusiasts from around the world will converge in the Windy City for the greatest and largest vintage pen show on Earth. And Rhodia will be there! Of course we cannot miss it! Although the official schedule says 1st of May, you have until the weekend to prepare for the much-anticipated auction, which will take place in the evening of May 3. Sunday, May 4, it will be open to the general public, and that’s when we hope to see you guys! And there’s plenty to be excited about! Including the much talked-about Rhodia ePure notebooks. We’ve learned that it will be available for purchase from Pendemonium at the show. So keep an eye on it.

Another item from parent-company Clairefontaine’s line-up, which is generating buzz, is the eco-friendly Calligraphie notebook line called “Forever,” which is made of recycled paper.

Except at the show, these two items are not yet available for sale here in the US. So if only for that, you should save the date, and head to Westin-O’Hare, which is just next to the airport, off at I-90, this coming Sunday. See ya!
